Building Upon a Legacy of Faith: Part 1

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.  Teach them to your children and to their children after them. (Deuteronomy 4:9)

A few weeks ago, Scott served as an usher in our little country church. When he sat back down, he leaned over and whispered that he couldn’t help but think about how many times he had watched his grandpa walk down that same aisle as an usher. That got me to thinking about the legacy that we leave our children and grandchildren.

Merriam-Webster defines legacy as (2.) something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past.  What legacy are we leaving?

I don’t often think about the legacy we are leaving during the everyday busyness of life. Honestly most days I am just trying to get through the all the responsibilities the day holds, but what if we were to think more about leaving a legacy of faith for our families.  What if we kept the important aspects of life in the forefront of our minds instead of the worries of this world.

God tells us to “…faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today-to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deuteronomy 11:13) He goes on to say that we are to “Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 11:19) What would our families look like if we obeyed God’s commands? I believe that they would look more like God intended them to look.

Okay you ask, what can I do to leave a legacy of faith for my family? In an upcoming blog post, I will suggest some ideas that every family can do.

Blessings,

Jennifer
