Transplanting Currants and Grapes

The weather this week (up until today) has been quite beautiful, so on Monday I decided that I would transplant the currants and grapes.  Both the currants and the grapes are currently dormant and since the baby is due in March, I decided I would rather try to transplant them now rather than in the spring.  Many of the articles I’ve read say the best plan is to move grapes in the spring, so hopefully it won’t be a disaster to move them now.

Currants right after I dug them. They are laying on a trailer for the picture. After this, I put them in a plastic bag and tied it up to try to keep them from drying out. When I originally planted them they were single sticks.

I originally planted both the grapes (purchased from E&R Seeds) and the currants (purchased from Missouri Department of Conservation) in the spring of 2014.  They have grown since planting but were still a manageable size.  The soil conditions were perfect to dig as it is moist enough to make digging easy without being muddy and prone to compaction.

There are four grape vines. They still had the tags on them so I was able to know which varieties they were when moving them. After taking the picture, I also put these in a plastic bag and tied it trying to keep the roots moist.

The location I selected to plant them is near a fence so that they will be out of the way.  I will still need to build some type of trellis for the grapes.  I hope that we will have time to build it yet this fall.

I am in hopes that next spring I will see that it was successful move for both the currants and the grapes!

UPDATE:  The currants were successfully transplanted.  Two of the grapes survived the transplant while the other two did not.

Blessings,

Jennifer
