“The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the Lord.”
Our family has come to adore the audio dramas from Heirloom Audio Productions; and their newest one, The Dragon and the Raven has proven to be just as fantastic as the others we’ve heard! Based on G.A. Henty’s book of the same name, this new audio theater brings Henty alive. Experience all the action of King Alfred, Vikings and Norsemen while being engaged in a wonderful tale of history.
In The Dragon and the Raven, we follow Harold and Edmond as they experience the Anglo-Saxon battle with the Danes first hand. The Danes (now called the Vikings) invaded England from the north destroying everything in their path and capturing all but one small kingdom in the southwest called Essex. The ruler of this kingdom, Alfred, was only twenty-one years old at the time.
The kids were introduced to King Alfred The Great, the only English monarch to ever be called “the great.” King Alfred devised military strategies that would lead to the defeat of the Danes. He also is known for his social and educational reforms. He is also known for the burning of the cakes he was told to watch for a peasant woman while he was in hiding. (The Study Guide even contains a recipe so you can make your own Alfred Cakes.)
Alfred believed that because the Saxons had fallen away from their relationship with God, that God had surrendered their land to the pagan Danes. He believed that the only way to defeat them was for them to return to their Christian faith. Because of this belief, he hired scholars to translate important Latin works into the language of the Anglo-Saxons so they could learn more about God.
Study Guide
The study guide is designed to help the kids remember and understand what they’ve been hearing on the audio drama. Each lesson in the study guide has the tract and disc number labeled at the top. The lessons are then divided into three parts: Listening Well, Thinking Further and Defining Words.
Listening Well asks questions about the portion of the audio the kids have just listened to. It encourages them to listen closely so that they can understand what they have just heard. Thinking Further encourages them to do just that, think further. They are asked to make inferences about why someone might be doing something or what they may be thinking. Defining Words is a list of important vocabulary words.
All nations walk in the ways of their own gods (Micah 4:5)
The Study Guide also contains three Bible studies. The first is entitled God’s Law and the Nations, the second is Love Your Enemy and the third is entitled Literacy. These Bible studies correspond well with the story.
Our family has really, really enjoyed listening to The Dragon and the Raven. We have now had the opportunity to listen to and review three of the productions from Heirloom Audio Productions including: In Freedom’s Cause, With Lee in Virginia, and now The Dragon and the Raven. We wholeheartedly recommend all three of these audio drams!!
