More About Life’s Ups and Downs

One of the life events that I had in mind when I wrote: Ups and Downs: Twists and Turns was the progress or lack thereof on the family farm house.  Scott and I thought that we would have moved into the house a long time ago; however due to circumstances beyond our control the house is still not finished (The house I refer to is a family owned farm house that was built in 1912.) and we are still staying with family.

So how did we turn this challenging situation into a more positive one?

We decided to build a cabin!

We are still trying to finish it up but I can tell you that the kids and I have learned so much about construction through this process. We purchased a portable garage (16’x32′) for the starting point then Scott built a 16’x16′ addition that houses our kitchen and bathroom/laundry room.

It is certainly not a large cabin but it is our own.

We have worked together as a family on every aspect of this project.  The kids have had the opportunity to help and learn throughout this process. (Talk about some great home school lessons!)  For instance, just this past week Brock was able to learn how to wire plug ins.  Talk about cool! We have had some friends volunteer to help throughout the construction process, one of these friends came last week and taught Brock how to prep the outlets with pigtails and then how to install them.  Then he taught me how to put the wires into the panel.  If you would have told me that I would be learning how to pull wires, install outlets and put wires into the panel a year ago I would have called you crazy!

In future posts I will include more details about the cabin.

Blessings,

Jennifer
