Beginner Spanish Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids Review

Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids was started by Kit Strauss, a suburban Maryland lawyer and mom, when she couldn’t find educational materials to teach her children a foreign language. She decided to get her kids involved to help her make fun videos that would appeal to kids while teaching them a foreign language through immersion.

More About the Starter Set 1

The first three videos (Levels 1, 2, and 3) are all on the same DVD. There is a separate Guide for Teachers and Parents for each of the three videos; Basketballs Aren’t for Breakfast, The Little Magic House (Part 1) and The Little Magic House (Part 2). The teacher’s guide is easy to follow along with.

The high quality stickers are fun to place around the house. The flashcards and game cards are also high quality (think baseball card size.) The workbooks have numerous full-color, fun activities to complete

Flight 101: Basketballs Aren’t for Breakfast

The first video, Basketballs Aren’t for Breakfast, introduced us to three brothers as they start their day with breakfast. We see that one loves to eat, one loves to read and one loves to play basketball. We are also introduced to the family’s two dogs; one who wants to eat breakfast and one who wants to sleep.

The teacher’s guide lays out how much of the video to watch with each lesson as well as additional activities to complete. Some of the additional activities include “Geography in a Jiffy,” a modified duck, duck, goose game, workbook lessons, and “Idioms in an Instant.”

The Little Magic House (Part 1)

It is now 10 am and breakfast is over. Eli and Parker are playing basketball when their neighbor Gracie comes over. From the outside, the boys’ house looks small but when they go in the house looks like a mansion.

This video introduces many new words. The teacher’s guide says to “plan to move slower than you did with Basketballs Aren’t for Breakfast and to watch it more often.”

The Little Magic House (Part 2)

This third level continues with Gracie’s visit. We are introduced to several different food and beverage names as well as a few colors in The Little Magic House (Part 2)

Each of the three levels have a colorful workbook that corresponds to that level. The answer key is in the back of each workbook to help the teacher/parent check the student’s work.

What Did We Think?

Our experience with Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids has been so much fun. The kids have enjoyed the videos. They are becoming familiar with Spanish terms and are using a few of them in conversation. The videos are funny and engaging so that even the younger kids are interested in watching.

Rebekah was the one who really wanted to learn Spanish, but I have encouraged all the kids to watch the videos with her and they are learning alongside her. Although they didn’t share her initial enthusiasm, they are learning from the videos.

If you are looking for a fun, immersion style foreign language program to use in your classroom or in your home, I would encourage you to check out Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids.
