Dig-It Games: Mayan Mysteries ~ Review

Recently, we had the opportunity to review the online game Mayan Mysteries from Dig-It! Games.  For this particular review, I have had Adisyn working through the game.  She is typically not a big “computer-game” fan; however, she has really enjoyed working through Mayan Mysteries!

Mayan Mysteries provides about nine hours of online play and learning for the child (or adult) playing it; Mayan Mysteries isn’t just about playing!  Dig-It! Games was founded by Suzi Wilcynski whose quest was to “create fun, interactive learning experiences for middle school students.”  She is trained both as an educator and an Archaeologist.  Using this training, her goal is to bring history to life.

The goal at Dig-It! Games is to combine math, science, social studies and language arts in a fun game like atmosphere; in order to lead to critical thinking, independent learning and learning about other cultures.  To do this, they provide a variety of online and iOS apps that you can download.

In Mayan Mysteries, the goal is to discover more about the Mayan civilization while you help the team, Team Q, try to determine who the looter is that has been digging up precious artifacts.

Along the way, Adisyn discovered that Ladrone is the looter who is causing such a mess and she has been working to help the team put a stop to her actions.  Throughout the game, she has had to complete puzzles looking for clues.  She has had to piece together maps.  One of her favorite parts is reading the comic book that comes from Team Q which features the conversations of the team.

Many of the questions are challenging and Adisyn has found the need to go back and study closer which has increased her retention of the lessons. The reward for those who remain pure of heart and preserve the ancient Maya artifacts is that the ancient city of Ich’aak might even be revealed to them.

How did we use Mayan Mysteries?

Adisyn has been working through Mayan Mysteries and is totally hooked on playing it. She has enjoyed learning about the Mayan culture and ancient artifacts.  She has also learned more about the job of an archaeologist; such as, using the proper tools to dig up artifacts.  She has “recovered” numerous artifacts so far.

Another aspect of the games is the Achievements section.  It is within this section, that the student receives achievement awards such as; Ich’aak Idol (score 100% on All Learn Challenges at 6 Locations,) Time Traveler (score 100% on Ancient Puzzles,) Math Maniac (Solve 2 math puzzles without hints,) and numerous others.
