Bring on Spring!

This winter has been one like we’ve not had for a very, very long time. The winter storms just keep coming. In fact, we are predicted to have another one starting tonight!

While the snow is quite beautiful to look at, I am ready to say goodbye to winter and welcome spring with open arms! Even though I can’t control the weather, I can start thinking happy spring thoughts but starting seeds indoors. I know spring will eventually arrive and I hope to have my seedlings ready. So this week, I’ve started planting various seeds including tomatoes and salad greens. The tomatoes were planted in traditional 6 cell containers and will make their way to the garden when spring officially arrives. The salad greens (various lettuce varieties and spinach) were planted in coconut coir in 2 inch netted mesh baskets.

Baby Petunias purchased at the produce/plug auction

When we bought the farm, there was a walk-in cooler that the previous owners had used as part of their  hunting lodge and guiding business. I have been wanting to repurpose it for a while to house an aquaponics system. We are finally about ready to make that leap. In the meantime, we have some flowers that will make their way into hanging baskets to sell later in the spring. We also just got our first shipment of ready to fruit blocks of mushrooms. I am really not sure how this will work out trying to grow all this in the same area, but I’m excited to experiment with it to find out.

Blessings,

Jennifer
