Unashamed: Healing Our Brokenness and Finding Freedom From Shame ~ Review

O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. Psalms 25:2

That feeling of not being enough, not measuring up, that feeling of shame. We have all felt that nagging feeling at one time or another. If you struggle with feelings of shame, I want to introduce you to a book I recently had the opportunity to review, Unashamed:Healing our Brokenness and Finding Freedom from Shame by Heather Davis Nelson.

UnAshamed cover

Throughout the book, Nelson often refers to research by Brene’ Brown addressing shame. According to Brown, “The majority of shame researchers and clinicians agree that the difference between shame and guilt is best understood as the difference between ‘I am bad’ and ‘I did something bad.’ Guilt = I did something bad. Shame = I am bad.” (pg 21) Nelson says that the reason her book is different than the book by Brown is that she addresses shame from a biblical point of view.

There are nine chapters and just short of 200 pages in the book Unashamed. Making it a great length to really delve into the subject without overwhelming the reader.

  1. Exchanging Shame for Beauty
  2. Living Shamelessly through Christ-Formed Community
  3. Clothed in Christ: Body Shame
  4. United to Christ: Social Shame
  5. Free in Christ: Performance Shame
  6. Response to Shame
  7. Shame in Marriage
  8. Shame-Free Parenting
  9. Shame and the Church

At the end of each chapter are questions “For Reflection and Discussion.” These questions are a great resource, helping you think more about why you feel shame, how you can overcome it etc.

Replacing Shame

“At it’s core shame is fear of weakness, failure, or unworthiness being unveiled for all to see, or fear that at least one person will notice that which we want to hide.” (pg.17) I believe that we all want to move past those feelings of shame. Nelson’s book is a great resource introducing:

  • The Great Shame Exchange
  • Living Shamelessly
  • Meeting Shame with the Grace of Forgiveness
  • and many other important lessons.

I have enjoyed reading Unashamed. It is so encouraging! Many of the examples that Nelson writes about are familiar not only to my life but those close to me.
