We have been working through Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting written by Caroline Joy Adams. This review is made possible by Everyday Education, LLC. This 218 page ebook features 60 lessons. It begins with phonics based instruction, then teaches slant and joined handwriting. Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting even teaches how to use a calligraphy or edged pen.

Everyday Education offers resources for homeschooling in a Charlotte Mason/classical method. Several years ago, Janice Campbell had used Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting to teach her oldest son to read and write. When it was time to teach her second son she was disappointed to learn that Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting was no longer in print. Since then she was able to get permission from the author to bring Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting back into print.

What is Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting?

Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting is a step-by-step book designed to teach elementary children to read in 60 easy to teach lessons. If one lesson is completed per day, you can teach your child to read well in 60 days. It can also be used to teach a struggling reader (homeschool or public school) to read well.

The handwriting portion is designed with children and adults in mind. The simple to learn, yet beautiful italic handwriting style is a great way to improve your handwriting.

This is a very brief overview of the chapters in Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting:

  • Chapter 1: About Reading, About Writing
  • Chapter 2: The Alphabet (Lesson 1)
  • Chapter 3: Short Vowel Sounds, Blending, Compound Words, Magic E (Lessons 2-23)
  • Chapter 4: Long Vowels, ow, oi, ou  (Lessons 24-41)
  • Chapter 5: Silent letters, Endings (ing, ed, en) and 500 most common words (Lessons 42-60)
  • Chapter 6: Handwriting Practice

We used Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting mostly for handwriting practice for the older kids and as a supplement to Quinton’s phonics lessons.

The handwriting portion starts out with the “T’was the Nigh Before Christmas” poem for copywork. Next it teaches slanted letters and then progresses to joining letters together. As the student progresses through the handwriting, they practice writing smaller as they will in a traditional notebook. Throughout the book, there are reproducible pages designed to give the student ample handwriting practice.

Finally the student is taught how to use an edged pen to make beautiful calligraphy.

The ebook (which is what we received) can be used for multiple students within your own family. This worked well for us as I was able to match the needs of my kids with the right lessons in Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting. However, if you have just one student that you wil be using it with, I think the spiral bound book would be a great investment. The ebook is $27 while the print version is just $2 more. With 218 pages to print off it would more economical to get the spiral-bound print version.

I really appreciate the simplicity and effectiveness of Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting.
