Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree ~ Review

Do your kids enjoy playing online games as much as mine do? If you’re like me you want them to play educational games rather than just killing time. Star Toaster has come out with a great new app called Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree which is a great online reading program. It is available through iTunes for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 8.4 or later. For this review, we received access to the app.

You might remember that we had the opportunity to review Orphs in the Woodlands last year. Brock especially enjoyed it and has been waiting for this newest book from Star Toaster.

The Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree is a 122 page book that is divided into twenty-three chapters. There are 75 lessons which cover math, science, language arts, thinking & life skills, and the arts. There are 136 jobs to be completed which review the lessons that were taught. Parents can easily track each student’s progress. Each child has their own profile. At least 12 different profiles can be added.

About Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree

A flood has swept through Hoggoh Hollow wiping out everything in it’s path. Abba was able to rescue Hattah the Hedgehog and five other orphs (orphans) who were from Hoggoh Hollow, but they have no food. They are told that food can be purchased at Gopher Gifts and Supplies. There’s just one problem, they don’t have any money. They are then told that they can “learn to listen and listen to learn” in order to earn gold stars, the currency of the Woodlands. In Stumptown, there are plenty of jobs that can be done.

As the student completes each of the available jobs he earns gold stars which he can then use to buy food and supplies for the orphs.

The green words (i.e. Birds chattered) link to a video. By clicking on the words written in blue, the child can learn the definition of that particular word.

The Job Training portion provides the lessons that are necessary for the student to complete the jobs.  Below is an example of one of the “jobs.”

After choosing the correct answer the child is awarded gold stars. These gold stars are then used to buy food and supplies for the Orphs. The screenshot shown below is an example of some of the things that the child purchases with the gold stars.

Star Toaster does a great job making it fun for students to improve their vocabulary and reading comprehension! Along the way they learn lots of other lessons as well. The kids really enjoyed Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree because every chance they could they were stealing my phone to work on it. Brock and Adisyn have both completed Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree and are waiting anxiously for the next book to be released.
