Geology and Apologetics ~ Review

We have had the opportunity to review two courses from Northwest Treasures ; Geology and Apologetics and Taking the Mystery Out of Geology. Both are online classes that can be viewed on demand, making them easy to fit into even a busy homeschooler’s schedule. They also have a high school series of physical courses through Northwest Treasurers Curriculum Project.

Geology and Apologetics Course

Geology and Apologetics is a 6 video course which is online and on demand. The videos vary in length from 10-22 minutes. The course is recommended for grades 8 and older. Purchase of the course allows for unlimited access for the videos for 6 months. Adisyn and Brock have been working through the Geology and Apologetics course.  I feel it is important that we are able to depend our Christian faith even in the upper level science courses, so when given the opportunity to review Geology and Apologetics I was excited! Even with their busy summer work schedules they’ve been able to work through much of the course.

Lesson 1: Knowing the Scriptures in the Secular Geological Age

Lesson 2: Clarifying the Conflict between Science and the Bible

Lesson 3: The Genealogies and Chronologies of Genesis, Are they Accurate and Reliable?

Lesson 4: Evolutionary Gaps in the Fossil Record, How Serious are They?

Lesson 5: Dinosaur-to-bird Evolution, the Story that Never Seems to Die

Lessons 6: Time and Chronology in the Secular Geological Age

At the end of the videos there are discussion questions to help the student dig deeper into the topics addressed in the video. There aren’t any answers to the questions provided for the parents to quickly look and grade. Many of the questions are more discussion type questions to get the kids thinking more. From a homeschool mom point of view it might be nice if there was a worksheet with questions available. This way I would have a record of them completing the course.

Taking the Mystery Out of Geology is a 20 minute video which introduces 13 terms that will help you understand Geology easier. Geology has typically been a subject that has a direct assult on the Christian Creation story. Northwest Treasures believes that the word of the Lord must be the starting point for studying any science, including Geology.

  1. Science
  2. History
  3. Philosophy
  4. Uniformitarianism
  5. Evolutionism
  6. Creationism
  7. Bible
  8. Geology
  9. Rock Cycle
  10. Rock Types: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic
  11. Tectonics and Orogeny
  12. Geological Time Scale
  13. Fossilization

Understanding these thirteen terms from a Biblical viewpoint will greatly impact a person’s understanding of Geology and the validity of the Biblical creationism viewpoint.

I appreciate that the classes from Northwest Treasurers equip students to look at science from an unabashedly Christian new earth viewpoint. The videos are long enough to cover the topic thoroughly without being long and drawn out. Brock seemed to like the course better than Adisyn but I expected that. She’s not a science nerd like her mom so she often says stuff is “alright” or “okay”; when I think it’s awesome. It’s all a matter of perspective, ya know?! As a side note: last year, Brock took the Dinosaurs in the Bible class and really enjoyed it.
