Starting a fall garden during a drought can be a risky venture. However, that is exactly what I am preparing to do. We have now reached D3-Extreme Drought conditions with very little hope of improvement in the near future. Yet, I am planning to transition several of my garden boxes over to a fall garden as the spring plants finish.
What Steps am I Taking to Boost My Success?
- Starting as many plants indoors as I can in an attempt to control growing conditions.
- Thoroughly watering the garden beds just prior to transplanting plants to them.
- Heavily mulching the new transplants upon moving them to the garden
- Watering late at night or early in the morning to give the plants as much time as possible to utilize the water before the sun is beating down on them.
- I am also planning to add row covers to my brassicas since I had such trouble with cabbage worms on my spring plants.

Your drought sounds worse than ours. What is your preferred mulch?
Because we have it on hand I use straw. I like to have it 3-4” deep.
Gardeners are optimists; we have to be or we’d quit gardening. We suffer from drought in various degrees a lot here in the South. Thank you for these tips!
