Math is one of those subjects that typically either students really like or they absolutely hate. Our house has always been divided, I have some kids who enjoy and easily understand math and some who find math a frustrating struggle. I am excited I was given the opportunity to review a 12 Month Family Plan from CTC Math. I was hopeful that it would work for all the kids; those who like math and those who don’t and I wasn’t disappointed. the kids have excelled with it!! In fact Adisyn excitedly told me recently that she “finally understands math because of CTC.”
How it works
Each grade level of CTC Math is divided into different “Streams.” For instance, 5th, 6th grades and Basic Math/Pre-Algebra all have four streams:
- Number, Patterns and Algebra
- Measurement
- Space and Geometry
- Statistics and Probability
Each of these streams is then further divided into topics. For example in 5th grade the Number, Patterns and Algebra stream is divided further into:
- Number I
- Addition and Subtraction
- Multiplication
- Division
- Number II
- Decimals
- Fractions
- Patterns and Algebra
- and Problem Solving
The topics are then divided into lessons. With each lesson there is a video that introduces the concepts taught in that lesson. In the 5th and 6th grade levels, once they finish the lesson there are Questions that review the material. The kids receive immediate feedback as to whether or not they answer each question correctly; this was one of the Adisyn’s favorite parts of CTC Math.
Basic Math/Pre-Algebra is structured a little bit differently. Once they finish watching and listening to the video lesson, there is a worksheet to fill out. The worksheets can be printed off. This enables the student to have room to work the harder problems with a pencil and paper. After Brock would fill out the worksheet, either he or I would just put the answers in the Enter Results section. If he needed to see what the correct answer was or how to work a problem he just clicked on View Solutions.
How did we use CTC Math
Brock has been working through Basic Math/Pre-Algebra. The hardest part was determining where to place him within the course. The way we handled this was for him to complete the diagnostic tests in each Part. I could then see his weak spots and assign the Topics he needed to focus on.
I liked that I could print off the worksheets for Brock ahead of time and have them in a 3-ring binder so that after watching a video lesson he didn’t have to wait for the worksheet to print. While he was completing the worksheet, I could have one of the others start their lesson on the computer. Later I could go back and enter his answers and let him know what his grade was.
When I asked Brock to tell me what he likes about CTC Math he said, “I like that it is so easy to understand the lessons. I also like that when I answer the questions on the tests it tells me right away if I am right or not.”
Adisyn started in 5th grade math but has recently switched to the 6th grade. She is gaining confidence in math while using CTC. In fact, the other day she excited exclaimed, “Mom, I finally understand math!”
I really like that with CTC Math the 12 Month Family Plan is affordable and that it can be used for up to ten students! I would definitely recommend CTC Math!
