CodeWizardsHQ ~ Review

Sometimes, I have the opportunity to review a course that I KNOW will be a hit with one of my kids. That was certainly the case for this review. Brock was able to attend a live coding classes for kids. It was a one day/one hour online course with other students and a live instructor.  CodeWizardsHQ offers classes for coding classes for kids, they also offer homeschool computer programs . The classes are scheduled at the same time each week for 12 weeks per course. They also have special one hour introductory courses which is what we reviewed.

The CodeWizardsHQ program is designed for students from 5th – 10th grades. One of the things that sets them apart from other coding classes for kids is their live instructors. While Brock took the class with a handful of other students his instructor was online to teach, give encouragement and check his progress. She had the ability to see what each of the students was creating on their own cartoon using HTML.

There are four levels in their program; Wizzard I, Wizzard II, Wizzard III and Wizzard IV.

Wizard I is an introduction to programming, HTML/CSS and a introduction to JavaScript. Wizard II focuses on Front End Development, Responsive Web Design and Back End Development. In Wizard III, students work on Mobile App Development, Advanced Algorithums and Data Science. Students complete a 6 month internship with a non-profit organization in Wizard IV.

Each course also consists of a capstone project that incorporates all the skills the students have learned during that course. Upon successfully completing this capstone project, the student receives a certifcate of completion.

KidsCodingHQ also has a Facebook group that serves as a good resource for parents of children who are interested in learning code. The Facebook group includes encouragement, resource sharing, ideas, tips and support for teaching programming to kids.

What Did Brock Think of the Course and What did He Complete? The goal of the class was for each student to make a nine frame cartoon. Brock was able to complete this task during the one hour course. Below you can see the code that he inserted to create his comic.

Brock absolutely LOVED the class!! He said that his favorite part of the course was that it was hands-on. It found it very interesting and easy to learn. In fact, he has asked if he can do more classes through KidsCodingHQ. We might just have to pursue that. 😉

I like the idea of structured class times (with recorded videos for any classes missed) and live instructors. When he had questions, he got an immediate answer from his knowledgable instructor.
