Building Upon a Legacy of Faith: Part 2

Last week I wrote about Building a Legacy of Faith. What does it take to build a legacy of faith? These are some practical ideas that I believe any family can implement.

Personally spend time in God’s word

When we personally spend time in God’s word we can draw closer to him. By knowing the Father intimately we can show his light to others.

Spend time in God’s word with our children

Spending time in the Word with our children allows us to teach them what we are learning.  Also our children can come to know our Lord personally.

Find a body of believers that we can meet with and that have similar values.

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another -and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:25

Pray

Our children should see us praying for them and for others.  We should also be praying with our children.  Not just at mealtimes (although that is a great start!) but throughout the day.  We should model a life mended in prayer.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. I Thessalonians 5:16-18

Last but not least, T-I-M-E

Today’s busy families are often so scheduled the very idea of a family bible study and worship seems impossible.   How we spend our time shows our children what is most important in our lives.  Do we make time for God or does he get the “left-overs”?

It is so easy to be busy everyday of the week and meet each other coming and going.  If we take time to spend with our families and they can see first hand how important our faith is, they will see why it should be important to them.

There are so many great activities that we and our children can be involved in but when these activities take away from our family it is time to step back and reevaluate what is important in our life.

In our house this is all a work in progress.  We certainly haven’t “arrived” at the goal.  However, I pray that we will indeed continue to build upon the legacy of faith that was started by our families.

What are you doing to build a legacy of faith in your family? I would love to hear your ideas.

Blessings!

Jennifer
