5 Days of Tips: Learning Together

If your family is like ours, you have a variety of ages and interests.  I have found that studying some subjects as a family has been helpful.  The Bible and History tend to lend themselves well to studying with a wide variety of ages.

Our typical day starts with us meeting together to work on our Bible study and read through history.  Once we complete these tasks as a family, the older kids begin working independently on some of their lessons while I take turns helping the younger kids.  We currently are using several online courses in our homeschool which has been helpful for me from a time management stand point.

Recently, we have been using the Resurrection study from Grapevine as our Bible study.  The younger kids have the traceable version while the older kids draw their own stick figures.  I have enjoyed the Grapevine studies we have done.  Prior to using the resources from Grapevine, I would just pick a book of the Bible for us to study and we would read some each day.

For history, I use living books and read aloud to the kids.  In addition to the read alouds, I try to have books that are during the same time period for each of the kids to read on their level.  Many times I will “catch” the kids reenacting scenes from their history lessons during their free play time.  Since they are all learning about the same time period, this makes it easier for them to act out what they are learning.

  1. Before my oldest started high school I combined them for Bible/History/ Science as much as possible. I find literature based studies the best way to do this as well. Not only did it make things easier on me, but I really enjoyed the fact that we were all learning together too, and it was a lot of fun!

  2. Our older two children are at the same academic level, so they are always learning together, but our 5 year old wants to join them as well. We’re always looking for ways and ideas to include him as well.
