Balancing Diapers and Deadlines ~ Review

I have been so encouraged from going through a course from Lisa Tanner Writing  called Balancing Diapers and Deadlines. In baby steps, Lisa walks through the systems and routines that she found very helpful in trying to balance all the responsibilites that a mompreneur is faced with. Even if you no longer have little ones in diapers, there are still many take aways that I have found very helpful. (Of course, I just wish I was done with diapers, well I guess we’ve made it to training pants, but still.)

More Details about Balancing Diapers and Deadlines

The course contains 8 main topics:

  • Welcome to Balancing Diapers and Deadlines
  • Building Your Foundation with the Basics
  • Minimize Your Decisions
  • Minimize Your Decisions: The Annual Meal Plan
  • Sustainable Growth
  • Growing a Business with Your Kids Around
  • Boost Your Productivity
  • Closing Thoughts

Each main topic opens up to various Lessons (30 lessons in total)  which break down the topics and then end with manageable Action Steps. The Action Steps encourage the reader to actually implement the strategies that they’ve been reading about.  The course can be taken at your own pace. So if there are strategies that you are already utilizing or you find aren’t applicable to your life you can go through those faster. While those topics that I found harder to implement, it wasn’t a problem to take more time to implement them.

I found so many things helpful throughout this course. One of the most encouraging things to me was the quote that is below. I have seen first hand in my family how true it is that my vision does help drive the family. I have also seen how important it is for them to believe in me and for me to believe in the. Teamwork truly makes a hard task easier.

I found for me that the hardest task that Lisa suggests is the Annual Meal Plan. I am such a fly by the seat of my pants girl that I have a hard time even wrapping my head around that much organization. I do, however, like the idea and could see how it would work well for many households. I seem to be most successful with meal planning when I freeze multiple meals ahead and then can pull them out on a moments notice.

I loved her ideas for how to incorporate the kids of different ages into helping with the different aspect of a home based business. I found that some things I also have my kids help with and learn from but there were several things I had never even given a thought. Some examples that I hadn’t thought about included having them help resize photos and brainstorm blog topics.

Although much of the course talks about her experience incorporating running a household, homeschooling and having a home based writing business, there are so many actionable ideas that will help anyone who is trying to work from home. Who couldn’t use ideas for creating more productivity in their business while maintaining balance in life? I have taken away so many ideas that I think will continue to help our home (and my home based business) run more smoothly as we fully incorporate them. My children will also learn so many hands-on, practical aspects of running a business. I still believe there is a huge benefit to working with our children and teaching them along the way. That’s one of the reasons I love that we live, homeschool and work on the farm.
