One of the challenging things about homeschooling a wide variety of ages is providing each of them with a high quality math curriculum. I have been asked many times about teaching math and science at the high school level. I have always enjoyed both math and science so teaching them has never seemed like a daunting task. The hardest part for me is being able to devote the time necessary to teach 5 different levels of math to my kids. That is one reason that I am so excited about UnLock Math.
We have had the opportunity for Brock to start UnLock Geometry as part of our review for UnLock Math. Two years ago Brock was also able to review UnLock Pre-Algebra. You can read our review of UnLock Pre-Algebra here. While the day to day teaching is covered with this online course, I can still be available to help when needed. This has been a good fit for us.
UnLock Geometry is the newest class offered by UnLock Math. Brock really enjoys the teacher, Alesia Blackwood. He enjoys her teaching style and says that she makes math fun. He likes that there is warm-up to get him thinking about math. The next part of the course is the video where Mrs. Blackwood introduces the topic of the lesson. These videos vary in length but are typically between 5 and 10 minutes in length.
Following the video, the student works through the practice problems. There was a learning curve associated with the practice problems. When working a problem, sometimes it will ask you to verify your answer. If you skip the step of verifying and go ahead and submit your answer it will give you a zero on that problem. The other issue that he had involved answering questions that involved units of measurement. If he wrote out the unit instead of abbreviating, it would also be counted wrong, i.e. tons instead of tn or ounces instead of oz. Once he understood what was expected of him it went much smoother.
The Stay Sharp section has more questions that help the student practice what he has been learning. The lesson ends with a challenge question in the Challenge Yourself section. Brock looks forward to the challenge question.
We have liked UnLock Math well enough that I have paid for a membership for Adisyn for the Pre-Algebra course. She has just gotten started in the course but so far she really likes it. I really feel like it will be a good fit for her!
