The younger kids and I have had the opportunity to review a fun literature guide recently, The Josefina Story Quilt – eGuide. While we reviewed The Josefina Story Quilt – eGuide other members of the Homeschool Review Crew had the opportunity to check out other titles from Progeny Press including; The Green Book – eGuide, The Scavengers – eGuide and Perelandra – eGuide.
I decided that we would just purchase The Josefina Story Quilt book and add it to our growing library. I’m glad I did, it is such a cute story and does a great job introducing younger elementary students to some important concepts in regards to traveling by covered wagon across the United States. Those concepts are studied more indepth with the eGuide from Progeny Press.
The eGuide is a 35 page guide that really helps the kids to dive into the book. The first thing the kids had the opportunity to do in the study guide was to color the map of the U.S. They labeled the Mississippi River, the Rocky Mountains, labeled key states from the story. They were then able to dive into the Vocabulary lessons. They were also introduced to concepts such as metaphors.
The Dig Deeper lessons helped them dive into Bible verses and other key concepts that were introduced in the story. They had fun activities such as arts and crafts projects, bread baking, a crossword puzzle, and a word search. These activities really added to the richness of the learning experience.
Synopsis of the Story
Faith and her family are preparing to follow the wagon trails to California. She asked Her Ma and Pa if she can take her favorite hen, Josefina, along. Intially, they said no but with a special look Ma convinced Pa to let her take the old hen with them, but that if she caused any trouble she would get left behind.
After Josefina nearly caused a stampede when chased by a dog, Pa said they would leave her behind. Ma saved Josefina, one more time, when she said it really wasn’t Josefina’s fault. More trouble follows Josefina, when she ends up in the river they were crossing. However, she saved the day when she scared off some would be thieves.
Ma told her to get started sewing together calico patches on their journey. During the trip, Faith continued to work on her storyquilt to help her rememeber the good and the bad times from their trip. When they finally reached California, her family helped her put all the patches together in her own storyquilt.
I really liked how rich the study guide is! I wasn’t sure of what to expect with a literature guide for early elementary age students. This was a great study for them. They could really dive into the book!
