The Critical Thinking Co. ~ Understanding Algebra I Review

For this review, I received a copy of Understanding Algebra I from The Critical Thinking Co.  Understanding Algebra I is a full color, 362 page, reproducible book written by Terri Husted.  It is part of the Award-Winning Mathematical Reasoning Series from Critical Thinking Co. and is geared toward grades 7-9.

Understanding Algebra I is broken into 12 chapters.

• Chapter 1: Our Number System ~ Sets, Operations and Properties
• Chapter 2: Evaluating Expressions and Solving Equations
• Chapter 3: From Words to Algebra~Translating and Solving Word Problems
• Chapter 4: From Words to Algebra~More Word Problems
• Chapter 5: Inequalities. Compound Inequalities and Absolute Value
• Chapter 6:Polynomials
• Chapter 7: Factoring
• Chapter 8: Working with Radicals
• Chapter 9: Linear Functions
• Chapter 10: Systems of Equations and Ineqalities
• Chapter 11: Other Types of Functions
• Chapter 12: Working with Algebraic Fractions

In the back of the book, there is a glossary which contains many algebraic terms and their definitions.  The answers to all the practice problems and chapter review problems are also in the back of the book; and there is a Reference Page that can be copied and laminated, if desired, to help the student remember different formulas and properties.

I like the way Understanding Algebra I is set up.  The explanations are easy to understand and the examples are easy to follow.  It is written as if teaching one-on-one to the student.  Since it is written to the student and the answers key is in the back of the book there is no teacher’s guide.  I would definitely recommend Understanding Algebra I.

I really appreciate The Critical Thinking Co.’s copyright policy as I can use, Understanding Algebra I, with all my children.  You can make copies for your classroom (up to 35 per year) or for your home.  Since I plan to use Understanding Algebra I with more of my kids, as they get older, I chose to have the binding cut-off and three hole punched at a local printing shop.
