If you, like me, are trying to teach different ages and grades at the same time, you might find the Homeschool Courses from Standard Deviants Accelerate (SDA) helpful. For the past several weeks, we have been trying various classes from SDA in order to review them. We received access to SDA Homeschool Courses for one year.
Here is the list of available classes and suggested grade levels:
- Arithmetic (grades 3+)
- Fundamental Math (grades 4+)
- Earth Science (grades 6+)
- Nutrition (grades 6+)
- Biology (grades 7+)
- Algebra (grades 7+)
- Chemistry (grades 9+)
- English Comp (grades 9+)
- U. S. History (grades 9+)
- AP Biology (grades 11+)
- AP Chemistry (grades 11+)
- AP U. S. Gov. & Politics (grades 11+)
- AP Eng. Composition (grades 11+)
As you can see, there is a wide range of available subjects and grades!
(Since Adisyn has been primarily using the Biology course I will describe it in detail, however most other courses are set up similarly.) Standard Deviants Accelerate uses funny videos to teach the wide variety of subjects. This engaging manner of teaching draws the student in and doesn’t leave them bored. The videos vary in length from a couple minutes to about 15 minutes. Each video has a full transcript available as well that the student can follow along or print off. While listening to the video and following along with the transcript, the student also has the option to take notes right there on the same screen. There is also a vocabulary section that goes along with each lesson. Following the lesson there is a Quiz and a Written Answer.
Note: Science is taught from a evolutionary standpoint.
When I am logged in, I can add or remove students to the various classes, from the My Desk tab. I can view the gradebook for each child, in each subject, under the Grading Tab. The grades are divided out by the Written Response, Act It Out, Quizzes and Tests and Subject Review.
What Did We Think?
Adisyn has really enjoyed the varied characters on the videos. In addition to Biology, she has dabbled a little in Fundamental Mathematics and Chemistry. She has enjoyed all three classes.
I appreciate that SDA is also so flexible that you can even use the Kindle instead of a computer. This is really handy at our house because we have two computers and several of the courses the kids are taking now are online. SDA is best considered a supplement not a full curriculum, but it is a great supplement.
I would encourage you to check out the SDA Homeschool Courses and try their 7 day free trial to see if it would be a good fit for you and your students.
