Sculpture Technique Model ~ Review

Are you looking for an art curriculum that is easy to incorporate into your homeschool, especially for those students who are upper elementary or older?  If so, then Sculpture Technique Model from ARTistic Pursuits Inc. might be just what you are looking for.  I received a copy of the book  Sculpture Technique Model by ARTistic Pursuits Inc. for this review.

Sculpture Technique Model is written for those students who are in upper elementary through high school (ages 11 and up), but it can be used with younger siblings as well.  I did allow my younger kids to work through it with their older siblings.

There are three Units within the Sculpture Technique Model each focusing on working with a different medium.

  • Unit 1:  Creating Mass with Putty
    • Modeled Mass
    • Static Mass
    • Dynamic Mass
  • Unit 2:  Creating Scale with Clay
    • Pinch Method
    • Slab Method
    • Slab Method with Paper Armature
    • Coil Method
  • Unit 3:  Creating Surface with Fiber
    • Wet Felting
    • Pre-felts as Surface Design
    • Felted Vessels
    • Needle Felting:  Creating Mass
    • Needle Felting-Appendages and Surface Design

A funny word of caution when allowing your younger kids to work with Durham’s Rock Hard Water Putty.  Don’t leave fall asleep.  The first time we used the water putty, I covered the table with newspaper and waxed paper.  I helped them mix up the putty according to the directions in Sculpture Technique Model and got the kids started working on their projects.  I then sat down in the chair with the two youngest.  All went well for a while and then I fell asleep (newborn, Isaiah, hadn’t slept well the night before).

When I awoke, the kids had completed their works of art and had left the room. However, it was immediately evident that Rebekah (age seven) and Quinton (age five) had definitely had fun with their putty.  They had gotten pieces of putty on everything close to where they were working; including the chairs, table top and carpeted floor.  Imagine my surprise when to find not only works of art but a large mess.  After I recovered from my shock at seeing the mess, and called the kids back to the “scene of the crime,” we started cleaning it up.  The good news is that it was easy to clean up even on the carpet.  After that, I made sure to stay at the table while the younger kids were creating sculptures. 😉

I really appreciate that the supplies that are required for Sculpture Technique Model can easily be picked locally even in our rural location.  So many times art programs require specific supplies that can be hard to find or expensive.  I also like that the lessons are written out in an easy to understand manner.  In fact, it is certainly possible for older students to be self led as they go throughout the course.
