Practice Monkeys Live Violin Classes ~ Review

For a few years, Eli has been wanting to learn to play the violin. In fact, we even bought him a 3/4 violin four years ago. So you can imagine how excited we both were for the opportunity to review a Family Subscription to Live Violin Classes from Practice Monkeys!! Eli has grown a lot in the last four years so we needed to get a full size violin. We opted to rent one to begin with. Rebekah also decided that she would like to try out violin and since we were reviewing the Family Subscription that was possible. After discussing it with Mrs. Van Kleeck, she placed Rebekah in Level 2 and Eli in Level 3 so that they could share a violin. This has been great because it meant only having to rent one violin!

Details and Expectations of the Class

Practice Monkeys is comprised of a combination of live online classes four days per week, 47 weeks per year, for 15 minutes each and recordered videos that are available anytime. The students are divided into levels. Each level has a Treehouse link. In the Treehouse, Mrs. Van Kleeck has many videos to help get you started right away. These include videos for learning how to tune the violin, how to hold it, a video for Student Setup and Parent Orientation to name a few. She also has links to helpful resources online to supplement the learning experience. Membership to Practice Monkeys also gives us a free account to SightReadingFactory.com for daily reading exercise.

Each week the students are to be practicing 6 times. There are four days of live classes and then two days of self-directed practice. If you’re like our family and sometimes life is crazy hectic and you miss a live class, never fear, each week the classes are uploaded into the Treehouse. This is great not only for missed classes but if the student is having a hard time and needs extra practice then they can refer back to the class period.

On Mondays, the parent receives an email from Practice Monkeys. This email outlines the upcoming week, recognizes those who have moved up to a new level, and reminds parents to print off the Practice Sheets. I have found these emails to be extremely helpful!! It’s a great reminder to get ready for the Practice Monkey week!

When students are ready to test to see about moving up a level, they need to have a personal assessment scheduled. The assessment is a one-on-one live meeting with the student and teacher. Rebekah has completed her first assessment and was so excited to be promoted to Level 3. Eli is planning to complete his first assessment next week, he wanted to get in a little extra practicing to make sure he was ready to move to Level 4. (As a side note, we were having technical difficulties when Rebekah was trying to do her assessment. Mrs. Van Kleeck was an absolute joy to work with as we struggled to get the tech issues straightened out!!)

What Do We Think About Practice Monkeys?

Rebekah says, “I love Practice Monkeys because it is so fun!”

“Practice Monkeys is fun and I’ve learned a lot. I like being able to have the live classes. I also like that I can ask the teacher for help when I need it too,” says Eli.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to be introduced to Practice Monkeys and to have the opportunity to review this program!! Practice Monkeys has been a great fit for our family!

Eli and Rebekah have both learned so much in the three months they’ve been taking classes. In fact, they were able to do a short performance at our church Christmas program.

We have made the decision to purchase a Family Membership to Practice Monkeys so the kids can keep learning to play violin. I’m excited to watch them continue to develop their violin skills!

Another Reading Program…But This One is WORKING

This time one year ago, I made the decision to try a “new to us” reading program. I had heard a lot about Reading Horizons and decided it would be worth giving it a try. We had reviewed so many good reading programs but we still were lacking. I had struggling readers who were getting frustrated. I was getting frustrated. So I signed us up for the 30 day free trial, after all what did we have to lose? At the end of the trial, I knew we had found something that was going to work wonderfully for us. So I paid for a one year subscription. That was a great decision for us!!

Reading Horizons is currently offering 30% off their reading software. If you’re wondering if Reading Horizons would be a good fit for your family, I definitely encourage you to try out the free trial!

I am so thankful that we started with Reading Horizons! My struggling readers are now emergent readers. Their confidence is growing. I know that the path with dyslexia is a challenging one, so when I find something that works well, well I celebrate!

Blessings,

Jennifer

A New Start and a New Year

Typically, the end of the year/beginning of the new year is a time for me to reflect on what worked well the year before and what I would like to improve on. This year we had so much busyness in life there were several habits that we developed that I would like to do away with in the new year. I didn’t have the time/take the time to cook as many wholesome meals as I really would like to have done. Which meant, we ate a lot more preprocessed or fast food than I want us to be eating. Not only is this more expensive but it’s not nearly as healthy. So I’ve really been working on getting myself organized to have more meals in the freezer to pull out on those crazy days. (I’ve also been working to cut down on some of the craziness which will help tremendously!)

A resource that I am using to help with meal planning is the Healthy Meal Planning Bundle. As an affiliate, I had the opportunity to purchase the Bundle early and I have been really enjoying this resource!  This Bundle is different from any of the other meal planning bundles for a few of reasons:

  1. The bundle is composed of recipes rather than cookbooks and meal plans from a variety of contributors.
  2. All the recipes in this bundle are set to a standard 4 serving size. This makes it so much easier for you to use recipes that were submitted by different contributors.
  3. Speaking of contributors, I am one of the contributors! I am so excited to be a part of the Healthy Meal Planning Bundle!!
  4. There is a usable index so you can find the recipe you’re looking for much easier.
  5. There’s nutritional data for every recipe.
  6. There are many meal plans to choose from.
  7. And all of this is offered at a lower base price than previous years!

Healthy Meal Planning Bundle 2019

This past year, our finances were basically put on autopilot; which meant, we really didn’t make as much financial progress as we would have liked to. We have sat down and revamped our budget. I am looking forward to getting our finances whipped into shape. I’m certain this will be an ongoing process, but one I am looking forward to. I am especially looking forward to slashing our food budget as a part of our updated budget plan. Perhaps you will join me in making deliberate plans for your new year.

Blessings,

Jennifer
