Dyslexia Gold ~Review

If you have a child who has been diagnosed with dyslexia or struggles with reading, you might be looking for a proven program to help them improve their reading and spelling skills. Members of the Homeschool Review Crew have recently been reviewing Dyslexia Gold.  For this review, they received the Dyslexia Gold Full Bundle. This bundle includes all four parts of the Dyslexia Gold program: Engaging Eyes, Fluency Builder, Spelling Tutor and Times Table Tutor. Dyslexia Gold is not considered a total reading program but is designed for students who have been taught to read but are still struggling.

Engaging Eyes utilizes games to students focus both eyes on the same point and track across the page. These games include: Target Practice, Eye Tracking, and Whack an Alien. Vision training games help the students show marked improvement with fun games in just ten minutes per day.

Target shooting with the 3D glasses is one of Rebekah’s favorite parts of Dyslexia Gold. She says it’s fun to play and she likes the audios that go with it.

Fluency Builder is designed to improve reading speed, accuracy and comprehension by being  used for as little as ten minutes per day. The activities in Fluency Builder help develop phonological awareness, rapid automatic naming, phoneme manipulation, segmenting, auditory discrimination and morpheme mapping.

Also you can choose whether to have an English or American accent in Fluency Builder. Click on the student’s name in the upper right hand corner, then click on settings to select the appropriate accent.

The student then listens carefully to determine which sound is being said. They then drag the blue sound button to the correct sound.

With Spelling Tutor, students see significant progress in their spelling ability in a short amount of time. They are taught to spell 1000 of the most common words by dictation. The process of writing the words helps the student to learn the spell much quicker than other methods. The kids are given all the time they need to gather their pencil and paper. Once they have their supplies, they click next.

On the paper, the student writes the sentence they hear dictated. The sentences all come from the reading passage that the student has already read. When they have finished writing, they click “Mark.”

Notice that the words that are marked as correct turn green, those words or punctuation that are incorrect are highlighted in red.

Spelling Tutor has significantly helped Eli and Rebekah become better at their spelling!

Times Table Tutor is based on Singapore maths which teaches math in three steps; concrete, pictorial and abstract. Students work 10 minutes per day with the engaging lessons which keep building until they have learned 12×12

Dyslexia Gold has been shown to show marked improvement in students who struggle with reading. Children who are between 7 and 11 years of age and are at least a year behind, showed an average of 12 months of reading improvement by using the program for ten hours (an average of 10 minutes per day for thirty days)

How Have we used Dyslexia Gold?

Several months ago, I first heard about Dyslexia Gold. It looked like a program that several of my kids could really benefit from but I didn’t want to spend money on something if it wasn’t going to be a good fit. So I decided to pay for one membership for Eli. His improvement was very easy to see. He was enjoying the games and was really becoming a much better reader. I decided it would be a good fit for some of the others but it never quite seemed to fit in the budget so imagine my pleasant surprise when I got the opportunity to review the family plan through the homeschool review crew!!

I have been so thrilled with the results of dyslexia gold. The kids never, ever grumble about completing lessons in any of the categories. Eli has continued to get much better with his reading as has Rebekah. Their spelling ability has also improved greatly! I am very thankful that we were introduced to Dyslexia Gold!

Recipe for Roasted Zucchini Boats

If you have a garden and grow zucchini, or you know someone who does, chances are very good that you will have an abundance of zucchini. My friend Linda from Apron Strings & Other Things, shares a quick, easy and delicious recipe for some of that zucchini.

To me, nothing says summer like fresh veggies straight from the garden or farmer’s market. That first taste of goodness is so satisfying after a long winter of canned, stored food. Every summer (and into the fall months) the most common, abundant, prolific vegetable proves to be the zucchini. We all have neighbors, relatives, co-workers dropping them on our doorstep, leaving them in the break room, posting a sign clearly marked FREE – HELP YOURSELF – TAKE AS MANY AS YOU CAN CARRY.

There was a time when the only way I knew to fix zucchini was breaded and deep-fried. Yum, the first meal. Alright, the second week. Not-so-appealing the 20th time serving. With a bumper crop I needed another creative idea to convince my family to gobble up this free, nutritious, delicious squash.

And so, this recipe for Zucchini Boats was born. Rather than frying, I wanted to bake or roast them. After a science experiment where my children cut and carved these long thin vegetables in canoes and tried floating them, the idea to create boats filled with a delicious stuffing mix sounded like a good idea.

Zucchini Boats baked recipe from ApronStringsOtherThings at FaithfulHomestead.com

To make Roasted Zucchini Boats you will need:

  • 4-6 fresh zucchini (small to medium work best)
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 pound pork sausage
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup green pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1/2 cup red bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • additional seasonings, optional (basil, oregano, crushed red pepper, etc. to suit your taste)
  • salt and pepper to taste

Step One: Cut zucchinis in half, lengthwise. With a spoon, carve a shallow trench down the center, removing seeds and making room for the filling. They will look like miniature boats!

Step Two: Place zucchini halves in a shallow baking dish (or baking sheet with sides.) Brush the tops of the squash with a thin coat of olive oil.

Step Three: Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Set pan aside.

Step Four: Brown sausage in a skillet. When thoroughly cooked, remove from pan. Drain the drippings, leaving 1-2 tablespoons.

Step Five: Saute onion and peppers in sausage drippings over medium heat, until tender. Add seasonings.

Step Six: Add cooked sausage to the onion/pepper mixture. Mix well.

Step Seven: Spoon sausage/onion/pepper mixture into your zucchini boats.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, until squash is fork-tender. Cooking time will vary, depending on the size of the zucchini, so watch and adjust as needed.

Finally, serve and enjoy! This can be served as a side dish, main dish or salad course. This recipe is very forgiving and can be fixed with whatever ingredients you have on hand. You may leave out the meat, creating a vegetarian dish. You can add other vegetables to the pepper/onion mixture (tomato, eggplant, yellow squash, etc.) Adding a cup of shredded cheese would make this recipe extra special. Be creative, use what you have, make it your own!

Thank, you Jennifer, for allowing me to share this recipe. I’m actually looking forward to zucchini season again this year!

Matific Galaxy ~ Review

Quinton has been enjoying fun online math games while we’ve been reviewing Matific Galaxy.Play is a great way to encourage learning. Matific Galaxy has taken this idea of learning and fun and developed an award winning K-6 full math curriculum.

About Matific Galaxy

Matific Galaxy is designed to be a full curriculum for grades K -6. There are over 1500 intereactive and engaging games. Upon purchase, you set your student up, including choosing the grade level you want them to work through.

The course is designed to be self-guiding, allowing the student to work at his/her pace. The parent/teacher can be as involved as they choose to be. In addition to showing the student’s progress, The teacher dashboard also allows for fun things like being able to send a note of encouragement to the student.

Like many video games, there is a a goal that continues to build upon itself. In Matifica, the student is working to recover the stolen pixels on each planet. Once the pixels have been recovered for one level, play advances to the next level/planet.

There are 50 skills that are taught in 2nd grade. The skills that are taught in each grade level can be found under the Math Skills tab on the Matific Galaxy website.

The Parent/Teacher Dashboard contains a wealth of information including which subjects have been covered, what his best subjects are and his overall grade. The parent dashboard is easy to navigate.

What Did We Think?

Quinton has two things going for him with Matific Galaxy, he’s a math loving kid and he loves to play video games. So imagine his excitement to find out that he had the opportunity to review aa product that combined these two interests.

Quinton really enjoys the games and doesn’t necessarily think about the fact that he’s doing school. He mostly just thinks it’s fun. I like that he does enjoy the games and that he is, in fact, learning. I like the flexibility of the course being self-guided. The summer months seem to be expecially busy with 4-H projects and extra activities so him being able to work mostly independently is nice. I look forward to him continuing to work through the course, and advance to third grade in the program.

Speaking of advancing, I also like that the parent can adjust the level that the student is working at. This makes Matific Galaxy an even better value. The cost of a full year grade level course is $

Matific Galaxy App

I also downloaded the Matific Galaxy 1st grade app on my iPhone. Hannah has loved playing on it. When she saw how much fun Quinton was having she wanted the opportunity to play also. The app itself is free but there are in-app purchases available. There is a Matific Galaxy app available for iOS for each grade K-6.
