Here to Help Learning, written by Mrs. Beth Mora, is easy to utilize in both a homeschool or coop setting. When given the opportunity to try this writing program with Eli and Rebekah, I will admit, I was excited. Our experience with Here to Help Learning and teaching the kids to be better writers has been a positive one.
We received a one-year subscription Here to Help Learning including all six levels. To begin with, I started Eli and Rebekah in Flight 1 of Paragraph writing. There are three Flights of Paragraph writing and three Flights of Essay writing; with the final Essay Flight learning to write a book.
Each of the six Flights are expected to take one year to complete and contain 32 lessons; while each lesson contains five parts:
- Pre-Flight Check List
- Flight Check In
- Take Off
- Full Throttle
- Flying Solo
The very beginning of each lesson, the Pre-Flight Check List, provides both the student and teacher with the list of supplies needed for that particular lesson. The Flight Check In provides a time for the students to turn in their Flying Solo projects from the previous lesson. This is also when they receive their Discovery Tickets (an incentive for completing their work.)
Take Off is the time when the kids are able to do games that reinforce the concepts they are learning. One such game that Mrs. Mora introduces is called Sentence-No Sentence. In Sentence-No Sentence the students identify whether a group of words is a sentence or not. This is done in a game show fashion to add to the fun. When we play Sentence-No Sentence, we often recruit Brock and Adisyn to play along. Quinton likes to sit in on it as well. The idea is that they learn the difference between a sentence and a sentence fragment in a fun environment.
Full Throttle is the main part of the lesson. It is during this part that they are introduced to concepts they are learning for that particular lesson. The final part, Flying Solo, is the independent time that they complete the assigned writing project.
Eli and Rebekah seemed to enjoy the videos and were humored by the funny pictures that were provided for them to write about during the Take Off portion. Mrs. Mora designed Here to Help Learning to not only be used at home but also in the coop setting.
We found that the lessons are presented in a fun, light-hearted manner which keeps the kids entertained while they are learning. I like how the writing process is broken down into manageable parts so the kids don’t feel overwhelmed with the writing process. One thing I found that I found was that the lovely graphics take quite a bit of ink when printing off the worksheets. On some of the pages, I printed them off with the fast, draft setting to save on ink. There is also student workbook that can be purchased from the Here to Help Learning website.
You can try out Here to Help Learning for free for 24 hours to see if it would be a good fit for your family or coop. You can also purchase a monthly membership for $6.99 per month.
