We received the DVD, Torchlighters: The John Wesley Story from FishFlix.com. FishFlix.com is an Online Christian Movie Store whose goal is to use media and entertainment to glorify God. They seek to educate, inspire and entertain through new release Christian movies and Feature films.
The Torchlighters is a series of award-winning, animated DVDs that are about “real people, real stories, and real heroes,” which are produced with children ages 8-12 in mind. However, those younger and older can also enjoy them.
The John Wesley Story is based on the life of John Wesley the 18th century Anglican Priest who became the founding father of the Methodist movement. The movie is 30 minutes long and includes several special bonuses. There is even a free leader’s guide (pdf) and student handouts (pdf) that you can download from the Torchlighters website to go along with the movie.
In the beginning of the movie, 6 year old John Wesley is shown being saved from his family’s burning home. His mother proclaims that he is like a “brand plucked from the burning” and that God must have a special purpose for his life. John Wesley spent the next 28 years trying to show that purpose through is own good works. He even sets off for America to try to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. Instead of feeling like he is successful at trying to please God, he feels like a dismal failure upon returning to England.
Finally John understands that he will never be “good enough” but rather he is a sinner in need of a Savior. Once he understands this, his entire life changes. He then becomes zealous in teaching others of the saving grace of God. However, not everyone welcomes his salvation story. The established churches reject his message and continually threw him out for preaching that all are sinners in need of saving grace. John then goes against the rules and takes the message of saving grace outside the walls of the church to the most needy and lowly.
Other members of the Schoolhouse Review Crew received other DVDs including the popular movie, Unbroken. Click on the banner below to read their reviews.
