Beautiful cursive penmanship can be hard to find these days. If you’re like me you have tried different handwriting programs and never found “the silver bullet.” My kids have quickly become bored by repeatedly writing the same letter over and over again. This changed when I was introduced to the CursiveLogic Workbook from CursiveLogic. The 96 page workbook contains both the teacher’s instruction guide and the student workbook.
CursiveLogic was developed by Linda Shrewbury when she was tutoring a 23 year old student through a local literacy program. He asked her if she could teach him cursive so that he could sign his name. She then developed the CursiveLogic Method which focuses on the similar shapes that are used to form the letters of the alphabet. This new method shortens the length of time it learns for a student to learn cursive.
How Does it Work?
Letters grouped by shape: CursiveLogic breaks the alphabet into four basic shapes. Each lesson teaches all the letters that are that particular shape. This makes learning cursive faster and easier.
Letter strings: Instead of repeatedly writing an individual letter, CursiveLogic teaches all the letters of a particular shape in a connected string. This allows the student to be writing cursive from the very beginning.
Color coding: To help the student remember the shape each letter string has a theme color.
Catch phrases: CursiveLogic uses “verbal task analysis,” or saying an action verbally as it is performed manually, to aid the development of muscle memory and to give students a mnemonic they can return to over and over.
Real words: Because CursiveLogic teaches a group of letters in a single lesson, students can write real words at the end of the first lesson. For some students, this immediate success is a huge motivator.
How did we use it and what did I think?
I have been using CursiveLogic with Eli. Up to this point, the very thought of learning to write curisve was not at all appealing to him; when I would suggest that we practice his handwriting I was always met with groans. However, CursiveLogic has been a simple, painless process and he is actually learning the process of writing in cursive. He was happy to not have to write the same letter over and over again. I am glad to see his handwriting skills improving!
CursiveLogic can easily be used for any age student, both young or old. I love that the student can begin writing words with the very first lesson. I would recommend CursiveLogic for anyone wanting to learn to write cursive through an easy, intelligent method.
I also found the CursiveLogic Seminar Class to be very helpful in teaching Eli to write cursive. I plan to use CursiveLogic with the younger kids as the way I teach them cursive.
