The kids have been creating their own masterpieces with the online Monthly Plan from Creating a Masterpiece. Artist Sharon Hofer, creator of Creating a Masterpiece, desires to make this homeschool art curriculum as a way to offer her classes to more students than just those who can attend her classes in person. She has a “passionate commitment to ensure that most every student, regardless of age or artistic ability, has the opportunity to create beautiful artwork.”
I will walk you through the Watercolor African Sunset as an example. The first page of each lesson tells a little more about the project and gives more details about why Sharon included the lesson. For instance, some lessons are created specifically to be simple and completed in one sitting while other projects are reminiscent of other time periods.
There will be a list of Helpful Tips that help get ready for the project.
There will be a detailed supply list so that you can get all the supplies together. If you are looking for an easy way to get the supplies there is even a link from each lesson to the required supplies on the Dick Blick website. This makes it super easy, even for non-artsy people like me, to get the right art supplies.
The high resolution videos are easy to follow along with. For any projects that require multiple steps or class periods, the videos are broken down so you can start right where you left off.
At the end of the lessons, there is also a section of Reference Art. This section displays art pieces that were used as references for creating the lesson.
How Did We Like It?
I figured that my artsy kids would enjoy working through Creating a Masterpiece, and I was hoping that I could get my non-artsy to at least complete a few projects without too much grumbling. Thankfully though, all the kids seemed to enjoy the lessons. Even though some of them have more natural artistic ability than others, it is safe to say that they all did a good job on their projects.
Adisyn really had fun completing the Watercolor African Sunset. Making the trees is the final step in this project and she thought it was especially fun. She got to use a straw to blow the paint out to make the trees and tree branches.
Throughout all the lessons, Sharon is quite encouraging to the kids. For example, in the the Watercolor African Sunset video she often tells the kids that with watercolors we want the colors to mingle, those aren’t mistakes.
Sharon breaks down the lessons into bite-sized pieces so the student can follow right along. The kids really can watch the video and create the artwork just by following her teaching. I really appreciate this aspect of the program! If you are looking for an online art program that your kids can complete and become confident in their art ability, you will want to check out the sample lesson from Creating a Masterpiece.
