We’ve been able to travel to Peru and England…for free. Thanks to Branch Out World and their lit-based unit study Paddington Bear. This particular study is based on the popular children’s book Paddington by Michael Bond. Paddington is the story of the loveable bear from Darkest Peru, that the Mr. and Mrs. Brown found in the station. But what would they name this bear? Paddington seemed the perfect name for such a bear, especially since they found him in Paddington station.
Branch Out World products are written by a veteran homeschool mom with over 20 years experience homeschooling. All of the books they have chosen have ties to the UK since they are from West Yorkshire. Some books are about the UK while others are written by authors from the UK. The lapbooks though are global in nature and making them ideal to use here in the US also.
Their resources are written so that children of multiple ages and interests can enjoy them at the same time. The Picture Book Explorers Series is written for children age 5-9. Children older or younger certainly may also enjoy some of the activities.
About the Lit Study
The study begins on Day 1 with reading the entire picture book, Paddington. Each day for five days the book is read. There are corresponding activities to be completed each day. The activities are varied in the topics:
- Day 1 includes exploring the setting. The kids were able to learn more about Peru and England. They also learned about immigration.
- Day 2 is focused on the author, narration, vocabulary, and subject-verb agreement.
- Day 3 studies the artist and different art techniques
- Day 4 is a study of bears from Peru. Complete with a shaving cream science experiements (including an edible experiment!)
- Day 5 focuses on math (including parrallel lines) and crafts (fun stuff like shaving cream art).
What Do We Think About the Lit Study?
There are a good deal of projects and activities to complete with this study. Or course the kids love the hands on activities!! There are so many great learning opportunities packed in this study. From arts and crafts to math and science to geography and vocabulary.
We have enjoyed this literature study of Paddington. I like that the actitivites really bring the elements in the story to life. Many times important teaching moments can be overlooked in a book because we don’t take the time to explore them. With this literature study those learning opportunites are fully utilized. We learned that the only bears that are in Peru are spectacled bears, therefore Paddington must have been a spectacled bear. We also learned the science behind foam. We colored the flags for both Peru and England.
If you are looking for a good literature based study to enjoy with your children I would recommend looking into this and other products available from the Picture Book Explorers Series from Branch Out World.
