Apologia Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal ~ Review

Everyday can be a great day for a field trip!  Whether close to your home or far away it’s fun to explore.  With the brand new Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal from Apologia Educational Ministries, you can now have a great way to record those field trips.

For this review, I received a spiral bound copy of the Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal; which is printed on high quality, durable paper and will hold up well even if you take it with you on trips.

The Journal is written to help you make the most of your field trip.  Beginning with, Preparing for a Field Trip and Called off the Beaten Path you can be ready to get the most out of your trip. On the Places I’ve Explored pages you can record the date and destination of places you have visited.  There are separate pages to record those trips within your state, The United States and the world.

You can get more specific about your trip(s) in the Field Trip Pages section.  In this section, each trip gets a two-page spread to go into more detail.  On the first page, there’s space for recording:

  • the destination,
  • date and time
  • a map
  • recording the books that you’ve read to prepare for the trip
  • your emergency contact plan
  • and what you want to see or do.

The second page is broken into two sections: Story of my day and Something I never want to forget.  With what looks like wide-ruled notebook paper, it is easy to write in both sections.

I love the idea of the My Special Spot.  This part of the Journal is devoted to one particular spot in wildlife (whether a park, field, forest etc) that is special to you.  Once you pick your special spot you are supposed to visit that spot in all four seasons.  By taking notes and recording them in this section, you can get an idea of how this spot changes throughout the seasons.

Do your children love to draw and write down their thoughts?  If so the next section might be their favorite.  It is the Thoughts & Drawings ~ As I See it section.  Some of the pages in this section have story/thought starter ideas and some are left blank so they can use as they want.

Another great resource that is included is a password that allows you to view additional materials from the Apologia book extras website.  This great resource has materials for researching a field trip, going on a virtual field trip, links to field guides and many other links.

Brock, Adisyn and Eli at Sandy Creek Covered Bridge before my cousin’s wedding began.  Sandy Creek is one of the four remaining covered bridges in Missouri. The older three kids have now seen three of the four bridges; guess where we are going for a field trip later this summer…You’re right the fourth bridge!  I was able to record this trip in our Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal.

I really like the idea of having a journal for us to record our field trips in.  We used this for our whole family but you could easily use it for just one person.  I just made notes of who was on each field trip, the date and the location.  In addition to recording field trips, we have also used the Journal as a way to record some of the important 4-H events that the kids have participated in, such as Contest Day.
