5 Days of Tips: Learning Together

If your family is like ours, you have a variety of ages and interests.  I have found that studying some subjects as a family has been helpful.  The Bible and History tend to lend themselves well to studying with a wide variety of ages.

Our typical day starts with us meeting together to work on our Bible study and read through history.  Once we complete these tasks as a family, the older kids begin working independently on some of their lessons while I take turns helping the younger kids.  We currently are using several online courses in our homeschool which has been helpful for me from a time management stand point.

Recently, we have been using the Resurrection study from Grapevine as our Bible study.  The younger kids have the traceable version while the older kids draw their own stick figures.  I have enjoyed the Grapevine studies we have done.  Prior to using the resources from Grapevine, I would just pick a book of the Bible for us to study and we would read some each day. 5 Days of Tips: Dare to NOT Compare

Human nature seems to lend itself to the game of comparison.  We compare our abilities, talents and circumstances to others around us.  The worst part of this comparison is that no two situations are the same.  While someone may look like they have it “all together,” they may in fact be really struggling with some area of their life.  How does this apply to homeschooling?

All too often, we can compare ourselves to what we think other homeschooling parents look like.  The danger of this type of comparison, is that we don’t know what areas of life the people we are comparing ourselves, to are struggling in.

5 Days of Tips: Learning While Doing

A great way that I have found to teach is through hands-on education.  On our farm and around the house there are often projects that need to be completed.  The kids are often eager to apply math skills they are learning by helping to measure for a construction project or by making a favorite recipe.  Science can easily be incorporated into hands-on life lessons such as gardening.  Often these hands-on lessons really help to cement concepts for the kids.
