Sculpture Technique Model ~ Review

Are you looking for an art curriculum that is easy to incorporate into your homeschool, especially for those students who are upper elementary or older?  If so, then Sculpture Technique Model from ARTistic Pursuits Inc. might be just what you are looking for.  I received a copy of the book  Sculpture Technique Model by ARTistic Pursuits Inc. for this review.

ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Review

Sculpture Technique Model is written for those students who are in upper elementary through high school (ages 11 and up), but it can be used with younger siblings as well.  I did allow my younger kids to work through it with their older siblings.

There are three Units within the Sculpture Technique Model each focusing on working with a different medium.

  • Unit 1:  Creating Mass with Putty
    • Modeled Mass
    • Static Mass
    • Dynamic Mass
  • Unit 2:  Creating Scale with Clay
    • Pinch Method
    • Slab Method
    • Slab Method with Paper Armature
    • Coil Method
  • Unit 3:  Creating Surface with Fiber
    • Wet Felting
    • Pre-felts as Surface Design
    • Felted Vessels
    • Needle Felting:  Creating Mass
    • Needle Felting-Appendages and Surface Design

A funny word of caution when allowing your younger kids to work with Durham’s Rock Hard Water Putty.  Don’t leave fall asleep.  The first time we used the water putty, I covered the table with newspaper and waxed paper.  I helped them mix up the putty according to the directions in Sculpture Technique Model and got the kids started working on their projects.  I then sat down in the chair with the two youngest.  All went well for a while and then I fell asleep (newborn, Isaiah, hadn’t slept well the night before).

When I awoke, the kids had completed their works of art and had left the room. However, it was immediately evident that Rebekah (age seven) and Quinton (age five) had definitely had fun with their putty.  They had gotten pieces of putty on everything close to where they were working; including the chairs, table top and carpeted floor.  Imagine my surprise when to find not only works of art but a large mess.  After I recovered from my shock at seeing the mess, and called the kids back to the “scene of the crime,” we started cleaning it up.  The good news is that it was easy to clean up even on the carpet.  After that, I made sure to stay at the table while the younger kids were creating sculptures. 😉

I really appreciate that the supplies that are required for Sculpture Technique Model can easily be picked locally even in our rural location.  So many times art programs require specific supplies that can be hard to find or expensive.  I also like that the lessons are written out in an easy to understand manner.  In fact, it is certainly possible for older students to be self led as they go throughout the course.

The League and the Lantern ~ Review and Giveaway

If you are like me, you want you kids to be reading wholesome books.  Many times it seems like there is a shortage of quality entertainment for our families.  The lack of quality entertainment is what led Brian Wells to write the book The League and the Lantern.  This is his first book; however, he is not new to the entertainment industry.  He has worked and produced 15 TV movies for the major networks.

The League and the Lantern

Jake is hoping that his seventh grade year will be much better than his sixth grade year.  However, it quickly looks like that won’t be the case.  Disaster strikes on the way to the seventh grade sleep-over.  As if that weren’t bad enough the games for the sleep-over are interrupted by a loud explosion and all goes black…

What Do We Think of The League and The Lantern?

This was one of those books that Brock just couldn’t put down.  Anytime he had a spare minute he was thoroughly absorbed in The League and the Lantern!  Here’s what he has to say about it, “It is full of action, the twists and turns leave you wondering what will happen next.  The League and the Lantern is also super funny.  I recommend both boys and girls to read it!”

I like that The League and the Lantern is written to inspire kids to read.  Throughout the book, historic sites are referenced as the part of the story’s setting.  There are also 140 key vocabulary words hidden within the story.  The story is also written in such a way to teach moral lessons about family, friendship, mercy and compassion.  I love when my kids can read wholesome books that draw them in!

The League and the Lantern is even operating on a buy one – give one campaign so that kids who can’t afford to buy their own copy can still receive one.

Zeezok Publishing ~ Review

The kids and I have been studying Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart over the past several weeks using Music Appreciation: Book 1 for the Elementary Grades from Zeezok Publishing LLC.  Here are some of the interesting things we have learned about Mozart:

  • When he was three years old he could play thirds on the clavier without instruction.
  • He was only 5 when he and his sister started their first musical tour.
  • He wrote his first true opera when he was only 11 or 12 years old.
  • He performed for regular people as well as royalty.
  • He had poor money management skills.

Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades {Zeezok Publishing LLC Review}

What is Included in this course?

Music Appreciation: Book 1 for the Elementary Grades includes a Student Activity Book, Music Discs, Lapbook, and the seven composer biographies.  Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini and Schubert are the seven composers that are studied.  The stories of these composers lives are retold in story format which draws the student in.  The biographies help to show the human side of these brilliant composers. None Like Him ~ Review and Giveaway

It is so encouraging to know that we are not like God and yet he loves us anyway.  In Jen Wilkin’s book, None Like Him: 10 Ways God is Different From Us (and why that’s a good thing), examines the self-existent, self-sufficient,  eternal, immutable, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, sovereign, infinite and incomprehensible attributes of God.

Jen is a speaker, writer, and teacher of women’s Bible studies.  She also wrote Women of the Word:  How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds.

None like Him

This isn’t a quick read but rather a book which encourages us to dig-in and learn.   It explores the truth of who God is and why we are different from Him. We learn about God and his design for us, and even though we are made in his image, we are not made to be Him.   This is so ENCOURAGING!

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Proverbs 31:30

Beginning in the Introduction, we learn the importance of becoming a God fearing woman.  She points out an important truth found in Psalm 111:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”   It is not enough to look at God as our heavenly father, we must also show Him reverent fear.

There are ten chapters in the book which explore the ten attributes of God are:

  1. Infinite: The God of No Limits
  2. Incomprehensible:  The God of Infinite Mystery
  3. Self-Existent:  The God of Infinite Creativity
  4. Self-Sufficient:  The God of Infinite Provision
  5. Eternal:  The God of Infinite Days
  6. Immutable:  The God of Infinite Sameness
  7. Omnipresent:  The God of Infinite Place
  8. Omniscient: The God of Infinite Knowledge
  9. Omnipotent:  The God of Infinite Power
  10. Sovereign:  The God of Infinite Rule

At the end of each chapter is a list of “Verses for Meditation.”  You are encouraged to look up the verses and journal about them to help remember the concepts taught in that chapter.  There are also “Questions for Reflection,” to further encourage us to dig deeper.

If you long to be encouraged on your walk with God, I would encourage you to read None Like Him.  I have been so encouraged as I have been reminded that I’m not like God and that’s such a good thing!

Some of My Favorite Quotes from None Like Him

“So it has been every since, human beings created to bear the image of God instead inspire to become like God.  Designed to reflect his glory, we chose instead to rival it.”

“The human mind in its finiteness cannot fully comprehend or express an infinite God.”

“Trusting God with our time means we make good use of the time we are given.  This sounds simple, but it’s not.”

Our Farm: Wine Cap Mushrooms

My friend, Julie over at Missouri Farm Girl, got started with mushrooms about a year ago.  She got me interested in growing mushrooms after hearing her talk about them.  So I started doing a little more research to see if mushroom growing might be something we could add on our farm.  I was definitely intrigued.  Then another friend emailed me and told me about a class that was taking place locally that focused on wine cap mushrooms (Strophariarugosa-annulata).  I decided I would go and I asked the kids if any of them where interested in attending the class with me.  Eli and Rebekah immediately said they would like to go.  (I wasn’t sure that Rebekah could sit through a three hour class though so she didn’t end up going.)  Eli and I attended the class.  We learned so much!!  We even came home with spawn for wine caps and golden oyster mushrooms!

wine cap package

We prepared a spot in the yard to start the wine caps.  Eventually, I want to have them growing under the elderberries and the fruit trees.  However, those plants are small enough right now that they don’t provide much shade.  So for now, we have a bed just dedicated to growing wine caps that has a shade cloth over it.
