Livestock Watering System: Tire Tank Installation Part 1

Water. One of the hardest things about Management Intensive Grazing (MiG) is having water where you need it. Part of our EQIP contract involved burying 7000 feet of water line, installing 10 tire tanks, and installing a new submersible pump in the pond. That all sounds easy enough. Right?

We had planned to have the new water system completed by the end of December. That’s what we had planned, but life doesn’t always go as planned.

What really happened is that the contractor who was trenching in that 7000′ didn’t show up to trench until February. Right when Scott is the busiest at work due to calving season. Although we hired most of the trenching done, we still had to set up the submersible pump, pressure tank and install the cattle tire tanks. We were very thankful that we had unseasonably warm and dry weather, so we were able to get along pretty well considering Scott’s limited time to work at home.

This was all new to us so we have been learning along the way.

The contractors had brought the water line and the drain line up where the tanks were to be set. We rented the mini-excavator and Scott dug out where each tank would be set. The depth of each location varied a little bit depending on the size of the tire.

The black pipe was the 1.25″ waterline, the white pvc is the drain line. Scott cut the drain off to match the height of the bead of the tire when the reducer was connected. He then used duct tape on the opening to prevent concrete from getting in the drain line.

In  Tire Tank Installation Part 2, I will illustrate how we put the concrete in the tanks and finished them.

Once Upon a Time ~ Review

I have had the opportunity to review the Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible and Once Upon a Time Holy Bible, the past few weeks.

“The Bible is not a fairy tale. Every great story happened once upon a time.” The Once Upon a Time Bible, from Zondervan is a New International Reader’s Version. It has beautiful full color artwork throughout to help draw in younger readers.

With the popularity of fairy tales and Disney animation, and especially with the new release of Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast on March 17, Zonderkidz wanted to publish a storybook Bible and full -text Bible (Holy Bible offered in hardcover, and pink leathersoft editions) that would resonate with children and families who loved those types of movies, and loved reading a great story.

The art will captivate Disney lovers with similar looking characters and color palettes. Zonderkidz wanted to capture fans of this genre, but introduce young children to the word of God, and introduce them to the great characters of the Bible. It’s important to note that this brand serves to resound the theme that the Bible is NOT a fairy tale, but every great Bible story happened once upon a time. The Bible is the ultimate Happily Ever After story!

All Around the Home and Homestead #23

After thirteen straight days of rain, we finally had sunshine again this week. The moisture was welcome, just as the sunshine and warmer temperatures have been welcome after all that rain.

Our shrubs arrived the day before the rain started so we didn’t get them planted. We are quite hopeful that it will dry out enough for us to get them planted this week. Time will tell.

It’s time for our blog party. Remember it is open all week, so stop back by to see what others have linked up.

Shepherd, Potter, Spy–and the Star Namer ~ Review

I have had the pleasure to travel back in time to the land of Canaan as the Hebrews make their way to the promised land with the Shepherd, Potter, Spy–and the Star Namer by Peggy Consolver – Author.

Let me tell you a little bit about the author, Peggy Consolver. She has been teaching Sunday School for 35 years. Through reading the Bible numerous times, she has gathered insights into the lives of the Gibeonites from Joshua 9 and 10 and Genesis 10 to Psalm 114.

She felt that the Gibeonites story needed to be told but that she needed to gain the experience of seeing the setting for herself. So in 2010 she spent eighteen days with the Associates for Biblical Research in Israel. That time in Israel really helped to shape her story of the Gibeonite shepherd boy who she was writing about. The shepherd boy’s father was a master potter and her time in Israel seeing the ancient pottery added to the depth of her writing.

Iliad and Odyssey by Memoria Press ~ Review

Memoria Press has graciously allowed us to review the Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set. This set is based on the 8th century B.C. epics written by the Greek poet Homer. The set features the translations of Samuel Butler, “which are both scholarly and easily accessible to younger students.” The set is written for use by students in grades 7-12. We have been using it with Mr. B as his literature course.

Memoria Press
The Iliad has been enjoyed by countless generations throughout history as a way to teach ethics and morals, civic behavior, and military tactics. The Odyssey is considered the first great adventure story and a great character story. Both have been very influential in Western literature and art.

The Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set contains: Both books, The Iliad and the Odyssey as translated by Samuel Butler, the Memoria Press Teacher’s Guide for each book, the corresponding Student Guides and the Instructional DVDs for each book (5 DVDs for The Iliad and 6 DVDs for The Odyssey.)
