Our Sweet New Baby

Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him.  Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth.  Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.  They will not be put to shame when the contend with their enemies in the gate.           Psalm 127:3-5

We welcomed our precious new baby into our family March 10.  What a wonderful addition she is to our family.

Snow Storm

Yesterday after the snow stopped I took the opportunity to capture a few pictures.

Isn’t that just beautiful?!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yesterday morning, when the snow let up the heifers went back to grazing.

Eli and Rebekah both have bottle calves that they are feeding.  Generally I make the bottles for them and they feed the calves but with the large drifts I have taken pity on them the last two mornings. So two mornings I have waddled out to the barn to feed the calves and do the chores and both mornings the barn doors have been drifted shut. Ugh!  So then it’s through the drifts to the other side of the barn to reach the calves.  (This would all be easier to do if I weren’t 39 weeks pregnant! LOL)  Each evening Scott digs the doors out and opens them but each morning they are drifted shut again.  🙂

We have gotten nearly two feet of snow this week so now we are unrolling hay for our heifers.

The girls are waiting at the gate. They can see Scott coming with the truck.

The bales have plastic netwrap on them which has to be taken off before feeding the hay to the cattle.

The heifers are anxious to get to the freshly unrolled hay.

The path that we fed hay on is where Scott pushed the snow aside with the tractor.

Thankfully through all of this snow we have maintained power.  Many around us have not been so blessed.  Now if this baby will just pick a day when the roads are clear to make his/her appearance.

Snow Goose Harvest

During recent years the numbers of snow geese have dramatically increased to the point that they are destroying parts of the arctic tundra.  In response to this, there is a conservation order in effect to try to reduce the number of Snow Geese by hunting.  The conservation order is different than a regular hunting season as it has no daily limits on the number of snow geese a hunter.

These were some of the geese on our field this morning. Too bad Scott was gone and didn’t get a chance to get any.

Scott has been hunting some as he has the time.  He had also told one of our neighbors that we would be willing to take some of the geese that other hunters harvested.  Imagine our surprise when we received a call on Saturday that they had shot 123 snow geese.

When asked how many we wanted I really wasn’t sure what to say.  I had never worked up that many geese and we had company.  Thankfully our guest was willing to help work them up so we took 119 of them.

That is a bunch of geese!

Three hours later we had 78 pounds of breast meat cleaned.  It more than filled two 5 gallon buckets!

I have been looking for recipes to try with all this goose meat.  I have made some jerkey that the boys really like but obviously will need some other recipes as well.  I have found several on the internet that look good, so I will post the “keeper” recipes as we try them.

I would love to try any recipes that you or your family love using goose breasts.

Blessings!

A Glimpse Into Life

So many life changes have happened during the last few months. I won’t try to list them all now but the major event was our move back to our home state of Missouri.

We are enjoying being close to family. The kids have really been thrilled to spend more time with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and their older two siblings(from Scott’s first marriage).

Our plan is to remodel the old farmhouse that was built by Scott’s family in 1912, but until we finish we are staying with family. There is extra motivation for the remodeling to go quickly as we have less than 4 weeks until the newest member of our family is scheduled to arrive.

We are tearing out the plaster and lathes, putting in new wiring, insulation and sheetrock.

Brock, Eli and Rebekah had fun knocking out some of the plaster!

Pullet Chicks and Indian Runner Ducks

Last week we got our pullet chicks and the first of our Indian Runner ducks.  Unfortunately the ducks took three days to get here from the hatchery and were not in very good shape when I picked them up at the post office.  In fact, there were already four dead when we opened up the box.  Of the 15 ducks only 5 managed to live through the day. 🙁

I talked to the hatchery and they were so gracious to send us 16 replacement ducks this week.  They are all doing great!  (It only took two days for them to arrive this time.) It was amazing to see how much the 5 ducks from last week had grown as compared to the newly hatched ducks this week.

Thankfully the chicks were only in the mail for 2 days and arrived safely.  The chicks we ordered are an assortment of brown egg layer pullets.  It will be fun to see what breeds we have!

We divided the brooder house into two sides by placing a short piece of plywood across it.

It is amazing how much water 21 ducks can drink.

Some of the pullet chicks enjoying their side of the brooder house.

We are all enjoying the new ducks and chicks.  The kids are very faithful about checking to make sure that they still have water and feed.  Sometimes a little too often. 🙂

Personally I am looking forward to all those wonderful eggs they will be producing next spring!

Blessings,

Jennifer
