Wiring a Light for STEM Education

Eli was inspired to learn more about electricity while watching and helping with the cabin construction.  So he decided to take Electricity I in 4-H this year.  This week he completed his first electricity project.  He is so excited to have it completed! (I’m excited too because not only is he learning but he has a project completed and the county fair is still five months away.)

He started by attaching the switch box and light box to the board.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThen he ran a wire that will plug into an outlet and provide the power to the light switch. Next he ran a line from the light switch to the light. He stripped the ends of the wires to prepare them for attaching to the light switch and the light.  He also used a pair of needle nose pliers to make the “loop” that would wrap around the screws. DIY Inexpensive Livestock Waterer

One of the most important aspects of a farm or homestead is the livestock water system.   Perhaps it is cost prohibitive for you to install underground water lines and automatic waterers or perhaps you rent and would prefer to not be making infrastructure improvements for your landlord.  Whatever the reason to not install a permanent waterer, it is nice to have frost-free water readily available for our livestock.

Building a Cabin: Our Construction Lesson

We are finally in our cabin! 

Although there are a few things to finalize, for the most part we are finished (or at least quitting.) Building our cabin has been such a learning experience on so many different levels.

I learned how to run wires to outlets and lights and then learned how to put those wires into the panel.  It was so exciting to have the electrician come hook up the power coming into the cabin and be able to turn on lights and they worked! Light switches that work may not seem  like a big deal but since I did it myself it was a HUGE deal. Continue reading
